Welcome to the_dmle!

What is this?
We are a Harry Potter Universe role playing game. We are post-war and do contain spoilers for all seven of the Harry Potter books, including The Deathly Hallows. As the name suggests, our game is largely focused on one specific concept JK Rowling presented in her books: the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Law Enforcement (the DoMLE).

What about the DoMLE?
The DoMLE consists largely of Aurors, Unspeakables, HitWizards and other witches and wizards involved in law, order and crime prevention in the wizarding world. Although this is the foundation of the game, there is space for characters outside the world of the DoMLE. Our plots give wide berth for non-DoMLE characters to get actively involved in the game's twists and turns, as well as develop relationships with characters that are working for the Ministry's law enforcement.

How does it work?
The game is played in phases that we call "Episodes." An Episode typically lasts about two to three months. In that time, a crime is presented, complete with links to other witches and wizards, both inside the game and outside. It is then up to the characters (and their players) to solve the cases and develop their own personal plots around it while the Mods use both NPCs (non-played characters) and their own characters to drop hints and further the plot.

What if I don't like the concept for the current Episode?
If this is the case, you're not required to participate. We encourage solo and personal plots as much as we do the overall game arcs. That said, it is possible for even the most "common" of characters from all walks of life to become entangled in the game plots and get a piece of the action.

How canon compliant is the game?
Very, but not totally. We do hold our players to everything that has happened in the Harry Potter books save the Epilogue for The Deathly Hallows. Everything else, from romances to injuries to backstories must be considered canon to your character as they are to the ones in the books. However, this does not mean that changes to your character have not taken place from the last book to now; people's lives often take drastic (or subtle) turns, and we like seeing that reflected in our characters. Use your imagination!

What kind of content does the game support?
All kinds. The reason we ask that applicants be 18 or older is because this is an adult-oriented game. In order to try to reflect a sense of the character's "real" lives as thoroughly as possible, sexual, violent or disturbing themes may occasionally pop up. Both het and slash are accepted.

What time period is the game played in?
We are playing in real time, which means that whatever date you are currently living in is the same one our characters are living in.

Getting Started

So! You've already been accepted to the_dmle and have made a character journal. Welcome aboard! We hope you enjoy your stay with us and can't wait to see what you add to the table.

We know that joining a new game can be overwhelming, so we're providing a quick and simple guide to getting started with the game. You've already completed step one by making your character's journal, so let's run through the rest of the things that need to happen to get you up and running!

2. Put a disclaimer in your userinfo. Better safe than sorry! Please put something either on the front page of your character's journal or the userinfo stating that your journal isn't real, infringement isn't intended and no profit is being made.

3. Friend all the game journals. This is recommended so you don't miss anything important. Even though most posts are either in the game community or linked to in it, some posts like private journal entries are not, and you could miss them! We have an easy, three step way to friend everyone here.

4. Give a means of being contacted. It's hard to plot and play with other players if they can't contact you. Make sure to drop a comment here with as much info as you're comfortable giving (we ask for at least a name and email address) so that other players can contact you for game purposes.

5. Tell us about your character. The best way to introduce your character and inspire others to plot and play with you is to fill out our meme, which can be found here. Fill this out and post it under friends lock in your character's journal, then comment at the post with your link. Feel free to browse the other memes linked there!

6. Say hello! Our OOC community, dmle_ooc, exists for a reason-- for you, the player. Drop a hello, intro your character and ask about things you might have missed! Open the road of communication and the plots and relationships will come flooding in.

We recommend this process even if you're an old player just picking up a new character - the trail of info you leave behind for others, like contact info and memes, will help your fellow players to play to your character as you'd like them to.

This is a list of all characters open for application at the_dmle.

The DMLE accepts applications only for book-canon characters. We do not accept applications for original characters. The only original characters present in The DMLE are NPCs (Non-Played Characters). We are not currently accepting known Death Eaters as played characters.

Please be sure to look carefully into your character's history in the books before applying for that character.Adoptable characters are implied to have some backstory. Potential players are encouraged to contact the mods, as some adoptable players various amounts of backstory (a lot or little or none).

All characters are bound to their book canon past (sans the Epilogue in Book 7). However, no one is bound ships that happened in canon past. The DMLE functions on The Deathly Hallows (and before) canon.

Before You Apply...

Before applying for our game, there are a few pages we recommend you taking a look at:

Be sure you fully understand the rules, as well as the premise - both dictate what kind of characters and playing style we expect from our writers. Also make certain you aren't applying for a character that is already taken. We encourage any and all applications, (so long as the character's name is canon and/or listed in the HP Lexicon), although a look at the Wanted list will give a good idea of the characters we're really in need of at the moment.

By applying for the game, you acknowledge that you've read both the game's premise and the rules, as well as confirmed to us that you are at least 18 years of age.

In this section, we ask that you provide us with a writing sample so we can get a true feel for your character and writing style. The sample must be at least 300 words long. Several formats are allowed: sample solo RP, owl post, public journal entry, private journal entry or blocked journal entry. Please address the rules or the game itself for examples of what the aforementioned formats look like.
